It combines a survey experiment with origi nal music compositions and interviews with musicians to explore how they e valuate music. The survey reveals that musicians\, regardless of their edu cational background\, exhibit greater openness to diverse musical genres t han non-musicians. This openness extends beyond abstract genre labels to c oncrete musical experiences\, as musicians rate original music excerpts mo re positively than non-musicians. To understand this seemingly puzzling fi nding\, in-depth interviews are conducted with musicians. The interviews u ncover two key mechanisms underlying musicians' evaluations. First\, music ians engage in empathetic listening\, often imagining themselves as the pe rformers. Second\, they evaluate music not solely based on its present for m but also on its potential\, considering how it could be improved with be tter composition and execution. These findings challenge the notion of a s imple opposition between 'highbrow' and 'lowbrow' tastes and highlight the complex interplay of social and aesthetic factors in shaping professional musicians' evaluative judgments. They also reveal a distinct evaluative a pproach among musicians\, emphasizing empathy and potentiality\, which dif fers from the evaluative strategies employed by non-experts.\n\n \n We are p roud to announce that our event has been awarded a Gold Sustainable Event certification by the 9IÖÆ×÷³§Ãâ·Ñ Sustainable Events program run by the 9IÖÆ×÷³§Ãâ·Ñ O ffice of Sustainability.\n\n DTSTART:20241025T143000Z DTEND:20241025T160000Z LOCATION:Room 375\, Donald E.
