When AI is used to set wages, it sets them higher than humans would

Published: 9 October 2025

When AI sets wages, it pushes them higher, according to recent research by Maxime Cohen, a Professor of Retail and Operations Management at the Bensadoun School of Retail Management. Cohen conducted a study that asked AI to recommend wages for 60,000 freelance profiles in a variety of industries. He found that AI sets wages higher than humans do.

While humans recommended an average wage of $23.60, AI models recommended average wages between $30 and $45. The AI models recommended higher wages for older workers and for people living in high-income countries like the United States. But it didn鈥檛 show a gender bias. Over hundreds of thousands of thousands of tests, AI models did not show significant gender wage gaps. Cohen characterizes this finding as a rare bright spot in the research, and one he was surprised to find.
