Frederick Chenel (BCom'04) has big plans for CFA Montreal. As the Association鈥檚 new president, his goal is to up its exposure, both at home and on the world stage. He鈥檒l be doing this by bringing industry heavyweights to Montreal to speak at the Association and by forging partnerships with major finance organisations. You can also expect to see Mr. Chenel promoting the city at conventions and other events.

According to a piece at BNN.ca, over 900 nominations have been reviewed and pared down to the final Canada鈥檚 2017 Top 40 Under 40 list. The list is a roundup of some of Canada鈥檚 most outstanding young business and medical leaders, and technologists. Goodfood CEO Jonathan Ferrari (BCom'10) is also listed, as is DAVIDsTEA co-founder David Segal (BCom'04). Interviews with the recipients will be airing on BNN Tuesday and Thursday mornings throughout the summer.

Alexis Haynes (BCom'08) had a degree from Desautels and a plan. Then life got in the way: in quick succession, her sister and father both fell sick, and her mother suffered a seizure that required brain surgery. Ms. Haynes fought through the stress to finish her first year of law school in England, and though her mother gradually recovered, her father passed away from his illness. Ms. Haynes nevertheless completed a postgraduate diploma and a Masters in international legal practice with distinction.

Desautels alumnus Yves Grou (BCom鈥77, DPA鈥78) has been appointed to Sama Graphite Inc鈥檚 Board of Directors, effective June 14, 2017. Mr. Grou has pertinent experience, which makes him a good fit for the position: he is on the boards of several companies that operate in the energy and natural resources sectors.

In 2013, he founded Algold Resources Ltd., where he serves as Executive Vice Chairman. Before that, he founded management consultancy firm Groupe Conseils Grou, La Salle, Inc. in 1980 and mining company Semafo in 1995.

According to an op-ed in The Chronicle Journal, Desautels alumnus Peter Cundill (BCom鈥60) was an investor鈥檚 investor. He was inspired by Benjamin Graham鈥檚 investment philosophy, and used it to become extremely successful. He eschewed market trends in favour of weighing a company鈥檚 stock value against its liquidation value; he would check out the country with the worst-performing market of any given year, then place some money there against future recoveries; he was a true value investor, with the patience required to play the long game and make a killing at it.

She comes to the job with almost 30 years鈥 experience in management, including over a decade in post-secondary education. She is a chartered professional accountant and certified as a fraud examiner and internal auditor.

According to a CBC piece, the mothers of two graduating 9I制作厂免费 students received last-minute visa approvals at the Canadian Embassy in Abu Dhabi so that they could attend their children鈥檚 convocation ceremonies.

Graduating Desautels student Ach Gaddes (BCom鈥17) walked across the stage in front of his mother, Amelle Liazoghli, even though visa issues had been keeping her away. Calling it the happiest day of his life, Gaddes said that 鈥淚t鈥檚 incredible to share this moment with her.鈥

Jamie Robinson (BCom'03) is in as the new CFO of Liberty Leaf Holdings, and is replacing outgoing CFO and Director P. Joseph Meagher.

Mr. Robinson is a chartered accountant with experience in auditing and financial analysis at Deloitte, Whistler Blackcomb, and Corinex Communications. He is joining a company that supports the cannabis sector on several fronts, including growing, research and supply-chain solutions.

Cannabis company INDIVA Corporation is actively navigating the process of becoming licensed to cultivate medical marijuana. As part of its business activities, the company has entered into a reverse-takeover deal with Rainmaker Resources Ltd., which includes equity funding of $15 million that is partly earmarked for helping INDIVA expand its production facilities.

INDIVA was founded by President and CEO Niel Marotta (BCom'96) who previously served as a resource-company executive and an investment banker. The new company aims to be listed on the TSX.

Andrea Courey (BCom鈥82) was newly divorced, with three kids to feed and no money in the bank when she started Grandma Emily鈥檚 Granola. She credits her BCom education with giving her the tools she needed to get through the early days of her business, but notes that real-world experience is a very different thing than classroom knowledge.
