Sanjay Rebello\nDepartment of Physics\nKansas State Universi ty\nTransfer of learning is often described as the overarching goal\nof ed ucation.  The talk will begin with a brief review of how\nthe theoretical perspectives on transfer of learning have evolved\nover time and present o ne perspective of transfer that has served\nas an overarching framework fo r some of the projects in our\nresearch group over the past few years\, in particular two projects\nthat are based on this perspective.  The first f ocuses on\nnon-science majors constructing their conceptual understanding of\nfriction at the microscopic level.  The second focuses on\nfacilitatin g transfer of the concept of mathematical integration to\nproblem solving in a calculus-based physics course for future\nengineers.  Finally\, I wil l discuss how our perspectives on\ntransfer of learning inform some of our ongoing work on the use of\nvisual cues to facilitate problem solving in physics.\nProfessor Rebello is a candidate for the Tomlinson Chair in\nSci ence Education. His biography follows:\nN. Sanjay Rebello is Associate Pro fessor in the Physics\nDepartment at Kansas State University where he join ed the faculty\nin 2001.  His research has been in the area of transfer of \nlearning with applications to problem solving.  Most recently\nhis resea rch has focused on transfer of problem solving skills from\nmathematics to physics by future engineers as well as the use of\nvisual cueing to promo te problem solving in physics.\n DTSTART:20120424T150000Z DTEND:20120424T150000Z LOCATION:Rutherford Physics Building\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 2T8\, 3600 rue University SUMMARY:Job Talk: Research on transfer and implications for learning and pr oblem solving URL:/channels/event/job-talk-research-transfer-and-imp lications-learning-and-problem-solving-216037 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
