 1970s Phase I trials were\nconducted on prisoners. After that practice was
  outlawed\, the\npharmaceutical industry needed a replacement population a
 nd began\nto aggressively recruit healthy\, paid subjects\, some of whom c
 ame\nto depend on the income\, earning their living by continuously\ntakin
 g part in these trials. Drawing on ethnographic research among\nself-ident
 ified “professional guinea pigs” in Philadelphia\, Abadie\nexamines their 
 experiences and views on the conduct of the trials\nand the risks they ass
 ume by participating.\n
