Second\, ma ny phonological processes bear\nclose resemblance to phonetic processes\, suggesting that no real\ndifference exists between abstract phonological s tructures and the\nphysical events of articulation. In this talk\, I pursu e the\nhypothesis that phonologically contrastive processes exhibit\nacous tic “signatures” that are a) non‐local and b) absent from\notherwise simil ar phonetic processes. Experiment 1 demonstrates\nthat English speakers pr oduce non‐local dependencies in order to\nmaintain contrast between words such as bite vs. bide\, but not in\norder to accomplish other tasks\, such as changing speech rates or\nsignaling phrasal positions. Experiments 2 & 3 demonstrate that\nEnglish listeners can use these dependencies to perce ptually\ndistinguish between words like bite vs. bide\, even in the absenc e\nof other cues. The upshot of these findings\, which build on\nprevious work that I ave done in Hungarian\, is that phonology does\nuse non‐local dependencies\, and these dependencies crucially\ndistinguish it from phone tics. I analyze non‐locality in both\nlanguages as motivated by a need to target maximal segments\, and I\nexamine the implications of this analysis for cross‐linguistic\ntypology.\n DTSTART:20120120T200000Z DTEND:20120120T220000Z LOCATION:Education Building\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 1Y2\, 3700 rue McTav ish SUMMARY:9I Linguistics Phonology Job Talk - Anne Pycha (UMass Amherst) URL:/channels/event/mcgill-linguistics-phonology-job-t alk-anne-pycha-umass-amherst-213311 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
