 his workshop is a historical look at the slow development of\nextrapatrimo
 nial personality rights in Quebec law\, from the later\n19th century to th
 e Civil Code of Quebec. With its stated aim to\naffirm and protect the dig
 nity of the human person\, the later\n20th-century recodification of priva
 te law brought personality\nrights into the civil code for the first time.
  Long before this\,\nhowever\, litigants attempted to use the law and the 
 courts to\nprotect intangible and abstract human qualities like honour\, b
 odily\nintegrity\, and familial affection. Their attempts – creative and\n
 often sophisticated\, if not always successful – illustrate some of\nthe o
 bstacles to and conceptual changes behind the development of\nextrapatrimo
 nial rights in Quebec civil law.\nAbout the speaker\nEric H. Reiter is ass
 istant professor in the\nDepartment of History at Concordia University\, w
 here he also\ndeveloped and supervises the law and society program. He hol
 ds law\ndegrees (B.C.L.\, LL.B.\, LL.M.) from 9IÖÆ×÷³§Ãâ·Ñ\, and a Ph.D. in hist
 ory\nfrom the University of Toronto. His recent publications have\nappeare
 d (or will soon appear) in the Canadian Bar Review\,\nthe Indigenous Law J
 ournal\, and Law and Practice of\nInternational Courts and Tribunals. Curr
 ently he is writing a\nbook on historical developments in the law of perso
