 oupled with\nintellectual breadth and curiosity. He instills in those arou
 nd him\nthe need to have a wide perspective on thinking in the field\, and
 \nchallenges his students to become independent scholars who will\nsurvive
  the theoretical whims of the time. Although the conference\nis organized 
 to honour Prof. Piggott\, its theoretical objective is\nto highlight phono
 logical research at the end of the first decade\nof the 21st century\, eva
 luating the contributions of the past forty\nyears in light of the primary
