Over the last five\nyears\, we have developed a new accoun t of Print Culture\, based on\nthe concept of interactivity. ‘Interactive’ is a word most often\nassociated with digital technologies\, but we conte nd that a nuanced\nand historicized concept of interactivity is key to dev eloping a\ndeeper understanding of Print Culture. This two-day conference \nbrings together specialists in a number of disciplines from across\nNort h America and Europe to address one large question from several\nangles: h ow did people interact with printed matter in Europe\nbetween 1700 and 190 0? Approaches to Book History and Print Culture\nhave typically been groun ded in the material culture of the book\;\nwe seek to supplement these app roaches by considering how print\nmaterials were used\, appropriated or en countered by individuals.\nAlongside a history of artefacts\, then\, we al so want to investigate\na history of practices.\nExamining print objects s uch as almanacs\, novels\, poetry books\,\nreproductive prints\, evangelic al tracts\, school textbooks\, and\ncollections of private letters\, and c ultural practices such as\nadvertising\, illustrating\, speed-reading\, co llecting\, circulating\nand annotating\, this conference offers a varied b ut focussed\nunderstanding of the media history of Europe and its colonies . An\nexhibition being curated in association with the conference\nshowcas es representations of people interacting with print in the\nperiod\, and m akes these printed objects the occasion for new\ninteractions. ‘People in the World of Print’ will interest anyone\nconcerned with how the productio n\, circulation\, reception and uses\nof printed matter shapes our cultura l heritage.\nDates: Thursday March 10\, 9:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.\nin the Blacka der Lauterman Library at 9IÖÆ×÷³§Ãâ·Ñ\nFriday March 11\, 9:30 a.m.-5: 30 p.m. in the Ferrier Building\,\nRoom 456 at 9IÖÆ×÷³§Ãâ·Ñ\nKindly R SVP to interactingwithprint [at] mcgill.ca Abstracts and\nschedule availab le at http://interactingwithprint.mcgill.ca\n DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20110310 DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20110311 SUMMARY:People in the World of Print URL:/channels/event/people-world-print-171747 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
