 s Unit.\nAbstract\nIn December 2009\, the Quebec National Assembly created
  the\nSelect Committee on the Right to Die with Dignity.聽 Through\nthe spr
 ing\, the Committee met with experts and drafted a\nconsultation document.
 聽 The Committee invited feedback from\nthe public on this document and\, t
 hrough the fall\, held hearings\nacross the province seeking to better und
 erstand the issues in end\nof life law and policy as well as public opinio
 n on these\nissues.\nOn November 21\, 2010 a poll conducted on behalf of t
 he CBC and\nRadio-Canada revealed that 83% of Quebeckers believe that\neut
 hanasia and assisted suicide should be allowed in some\ncircumstances.聽 As
  it did on abortion and same sex marriage\,\nwill Quebec once again lead t
 he way on a controversial social\nissue?聽 Should it?\nIn this talk\, Jocel
 yn Downie will review the state of end of\nlife law and policy in Canada a
 nd offer up a position on what\nQuebec (and other jurisdictions at various
  levels of government)\ncould and should do in response to calls for the d
 ecriminalization\nof euthanasia and assisted suicide.\nAbout the speaker\n
 Jocelyn Downie\, SJD\, FCAHS\, FRSC. Jocelyn\ntrained in Philosophy at Que
 en's University and the University of\nCambridge.聽 She trained in Law at t
 he University of Toronto\nand the University of Michigan.聽 After graduatio
 n from law\nschool\, she clerked for former Chief Justice Lamer at the Sup
 reme\nCourt of Canada.聽 She was the Director of the Dalhousie Health\nLaw 
 Institute for ten years and now holds a Canada Research Chair\nin Health L
 aw and Policy and is a Professor in the Faculties of Law\nand Medicine at 
 Dalhousie University.聽 Jocelyn has worked on a\nrange of topics in health 
 law and policy including the governance\nof research involving humans\, ne
 uroethics and law\, organ donation\nlaw\, and women's health.聽 She has als
 o worked extensively on\nend of life law and policy - she was the Consulta
 nt to the Special\nSenate Committee on Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide\, h
 as authored\nnumerous papers as well as Dying Justice: A Case for the\nDec
 riminalization of Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide in\nCanada\, and is a me
 mber of the Royal Society Expert Panel on\nEnd of Life Decision-Making.\n聽
