Their\ndomestication has led to the production of va rious products for\nhuman consumption such as honey and wax. As well\, the y are\nefficient pollinators for many fruits and vegetables which humans\n consume daily. Recently\, honeybee populations have experienced\nlarge dec lines. The theories explaining this phenomenon vary but\,\nwhat is certain is that\, if it continues\, it will have a\ndetrimental effect on agricul tural production.\n\nOriginally born in Ethiopia\, Anteneh is currently in his first year\nof the MSc program of the department of Bioresource Engin eering\,\nworking under the supervision of Dr. Adamowski. He completed his \nBachelor of Science at 9I制作厂免费.\n\n\nItem 2: Seminar by Ariahn a Jones\nThe Evolution of Yoga\n\nThe popularity of Yoga has increased sub stantially over the past\ndecade. Yoga's visibility in the media exposes i ts diversity and\nthe varied reasons people are turning to it. The physica l benefits\nof a toned and flexible body have been emphasized in modern yo ga\nclasses\, but there are benefits beyond just the physical aspect\nthat can be realized with yoga. On a deeper level\, Yoga includes\npractices t hat lead us to a new awareness by opening and unifying\nbody\, mind\, and heart. Today\, Yoga's social reality reflects the\nmeeting of an ancient I ndian spiritual path and American business.\nAs the practice of Yoga expan ds into the mainstream\, it is\nimportant to take a quick look at the hist ory of yoga to help us\nappreciate its rich tradition\, and how the phenom ena that is\nsweeping the world today is rooted in an ancient practice whi ch is\nmuch more than a fitness routine.\n\nAriahna Jones is an MSc candid ate in the Integrated Water Resource\nManagement Program. Originally from Washington State\, she attended\nWestern Washington University where she m ajored in Geography with\nminors in GIS and Environmental Education. Worki ng in the outdoor\nindustry for the past few years has fueled her passion for the\nprotection and preservation of Earth's invaluable and finite\nnat ural resources which\, in turn has led her to the program at\n9I制作厂免费.\n\n \nItem 3: Seminar by Jorge Diaz Martinez\nColombia is Passion\n\nColombia has been stigmatized as a dangerous country. Since five\nyears ago\, the C olombian government has implemented a campaign\,\nColombia is Passion\, to improve the country鈥檚 reputation. This\ncampaign has resulted in increase d tourism\, and all Bioresource\nEngineering students\, teachers and staff are welcome to visit\nColombia.\n\nJorge comes from Colombia. He is a mec hanical engineer from Los\nAndes University in Bogot谩. He has worked on th e design of\nhydroelectric plants\, aqueducts and an ethanol plant in Colo mbia\,\nM茅xico and Ecuador. He is in his the first year of the Master\ndeg ree\, working under the supervision of Dr. Raghavan.\n\n\nItem 4: Seminar by David Sims\nGeology and water management\n\nMetal mining in Canada invo lves significant expenditures to manage\nwater effluent from tailings pond s. As regulations become more\nstringent\, metal mine operations are under increasing pressure to\nbetter manage their tailings ponds and prevent co ntaminated water\nlosses into the environment. One of the main issues with improperly\ndesigned tailings dams is often not the dam itself\, but the bedrock\non which it is built. In this presentation the various specialtie s\nof geology will be examined\, and how each of them contributes to\nthe evaluation of bedrock below tailings dams to improve water\ntightness.\n\n David has a degree in geology with a minor in environmental\nstudies/ rest oration from the University of Victoria\, BC (1999). He\nhas worked as an environmental/geotechnical consultant for the\nmining industry and is curr ently doing his Master鈥檚 in Integrated\nWater Resource Management\, with a focus on hydrogeology and\ngroundwater modeling.\n\n\nItem 5: Seminar by Kana Matsui:\nAgricultural Villages in Japan\n\nContrary to popular belief \, there is much more to Japan than\nadvanced robot and videogame technolo gy and the traditional Zen or\n鈥渟amurai鈥 culture. Currently\, a major nati onal issue is\nagricultural sustainability and food security. In this pres entation\nI will briefly explore some agricultural characteristics of Japa n\nand some current issues. I will illustrate these with examples of\nrece nt village movements.\n\nKana was born in Japan but raised in the United S tates. She\ngraduated with a Civil/Environmental Engineering degree from t he\nUniversity of Maryland and is currently in her first semester of a\nno n-thesis Master鈥檚 degree\, supervised by Professor Jan\nAdamowski.\n DTSTART:20101118T150000Z DTEND:20101118T163000Z LOCATION:Raymond Building\, CA\, QC\, St Anne de Bellevue\, H9X 3V9\, 21111 Lakeshore Road SUMMARY:BIORESOURCE ENGINEERING SEMINAR URL:/channels/event/bioresource-engineering-seminar-16 9650 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
