The implication of this\nidea is that beyond word recognition\, languag e interpretation takes\nplace in a two-step fashion. First\, the meaning o f a sentence is\ncomputed. In a second step the sentence meaning is integr ated with\ninformation from prior discourse\, with world knowledge\, with \ninformation about the speaker\, and with semantic information from\nextr alinguistic domains such as co-speech gestures or the visual\nworld. FMRI results and results from recordings of event related\nbrain potentials wil l be presented that are inconsistent with this\nclassical Fregean model of language intepretation. Our data support\na model in which knowledge abou t the context and the world\,\nknowledge about concomitant information fro m other modalities\, and\nknowledge about the speaker are brought to bear immediately\, by the\nsame fast-acting brain system that combines the mean ings of\nindividual words into a message-level representation. The Memory\ ,\nUnification and Control (MUC) model of language accounts for these\ndat a. Resting state connectivity data\, and results from\nPsycho-Physiologica l Interactions will be discussed\, suggesting a\ndivision of labour betwee n temporal and inferior frontal cortex.\nThese results indicate that Broca ’s area and adjacent cortex play\nan important role in semantic and syntac tic unification operations.\nI will also discuss fMRI results that indicat e the insufficiency of\nthe Mirror Neuron Hypothesis to explain language u nderstanding.\nInstead I will sketch a picture of language processing from an\nembrained perspective.\n DTSTART:20100416T170000Z DTEND:20100416T183000Z LOCATION:CA\, 1160 Pine Ave. West\, 1160 Pine Ave. West\, Goodman Cancer Re search Centre\, Room 501 SUMMARY:Dr. Peter Hagoort: CRLMB Distinguished Lecture Series - CANCELLED d ue to travel disruption URL:/channels/event/dr-peter-hagoort-crlmb-distinguish ed-lecture-series-cancelled-due-travel-disruption-115814 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
