The most immediate of these is space\ndebris\, the nonfunctional satellites\, launch vehicles and related\nobjects that orbit the Earth un controlled.\nOn 10 February 2009\, an inactive Cosmos-2251 satellite and a n\nactive commercial Iridium-33 satellite collided in low-Earth orbit\nat an altitude of about 800 kilometres above Siberia. This created\na large c loud of space debris\, which could remain in orbit possibly\nfor decades a nd continue threatening other active satellites. The\nloss of Iridium-33 d isrupted telecommunication service to a section\nof Iridium customers.\nTh e growing awareness of the impact of space debris upon the\nsafety of spac e operations and space-based assets has encouraged\nsome space actors to t ake steps to mitigate the production of new\ndebris through the developmen t and implementation of national and\ninternational debris mitigation meas ures. In 2007\, the United\nNations Committee on Peaceful Uses of Outer Sp ace (COPUOS) adopted\nSpace Debris Mitigation Guidelines\, which were subs equently\nendorsed by the UN General Assembly (hereinafter referred to as UN\nCOPUOS Guidelines).\n\nTo assess the value of the UN COPUOS Guidelines \nTo assess current efforts to implement the UN COPUOS\nGuidelines\nTo exa mine further legal\, organizational and technical\nfoundations for possibl e national\, regional\, and international\nimplementation\nExamine other i nternational space safety & security\nendeavours and assess whether they a re complementary to the UN\nCOPUOS Guidelines.\nTo propose specific and vi able policy and regulatory steps\n(mechanisms) to monitor and reduce the s pace debris risks.\n\nTo find out more on this Congress\, please see the p rogramme and backgrounder or contact Ms.\nCatherine Doldirina.\nOrganisati on\nOrganised by the 9IÖÆ×÷³§Ãâ·Ñ Institute of Air and Space\nLaw\, i n collaboration with the Cologne University Institute of Air\nand Space La w (Germany) and the International Association for the\nAdvancement of Spac e Safety (The Netherlands)\, and sponsored by the\nErin J. C. Arsenault Tr ust and the United Nations Office for Outer\nSpace Affairs.\n DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20090507 DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20090509 LOCATION:Chancellor Day Hall\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 1W9\, 3644 rue Peel SUMMARY:International Interdisciplinary Congress on Space Debris - Part I URL:/channels/event/international-interdisciplinary-co ngress-space-debris-part-i-104375 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
