 on reviews recent archaeological reports from the\nwestern Indian Ocean\, 
 especially between the Red Sea and the Indian\nsubcontinent with two objec
 tives in mind: one\, to assess the legacy\nof the Greeks who had sailed th
 e region from the fifth-fourth\ncenturies BCE to at least the eighth centu
 ry\; and second to focus\non change in the nature of seafaring activity wi
 th the introduction\nof Islam in the Indian Ocean world. It thus focuses o
 n the region\nof the Red Sea and its links with centres in the western Ind
 ian\nOcean\, thereby shifting the fulcrum westward from the 'central\nIsla
