"Religion in the World: Pluralism, Multiculturalism and Complexity"

Society’s rich mixture of religions presents countless opportunities to encounter and explore human culture, history and thought. In Canada and around the world, modern life requires us to consider how people and societies both make and express religious meaning. This class will look at religious traditions as an integral dimension of society and encourage analytical attentiveness to their meaning and expression, with examples drawn from the past and present, and from locales near and far.

Ellen Aitken is Dean of the Faculty of Religious Studies and teaches early Christian history and literature. Prior to coming to 9IÖÆ×÷³§Ãâ·Ñ in 2004, she was on the faculty of the Divinity School at Harvard University. She holds degrees from Harvard and the University of the South, with training in folklore and mythology, the classics, and religious studies. She is Chair of the Governing Board of 9IÖÆ×÷³§Ãâ·Ñ’s Centre for Research on Religion and an honorary faculty member of the Montreal Diocesan Theological College. She was ordained in the Episcopal (Anglican) Church in 1986 and is recognized as a leader in both scholarly and ecclesial communities. Professor Aitken has also received two awards for teaching excellence. Her publications include "Jesus’ Death in Early Christian Memory: The Poetics of the Passion" (2004) and "Flavius Philostratus’s Heroikos" (translation and commentary, 2001). She is co-editor of "The Bible in the Public Square: Reading the Signs of the Times" (2008).
