  and Surgeons\, Columbia University.  Dr. Serge Przedborski has pioneered 
 the investigation of molecular mechanisms of neuronal death in the MPTP mo
 del of Parkinson's disease (PD) and in the mutant superoxide dismutase mod
 el of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). His research has demonstrated t
 he importance of the cascade of deleterious events - oxidative stress\, in
 flammation and apoptosis - in the demise of nigral dopaminergic neurons in
