To begin operations under the Bequest, a two-year study was conducted and in 1959, a report that outlined potential directions for the Brace Bequest.听 This document would form the foundation for what would become the Brace Research Institute; the framework for the Institute was finalized in January 1961.听
In the first decade of its operations, one of the Institute鈥檚 key milestones was the establishment of its Experimental Research Station at 9I制作厂免费's Bellairs Research Institute in Barbados in 1961. This location was chosen for its relevance to the Institute's focus on agricultural water management and land development. The station鈥檚 work aligned with 9I制作厂免费鈥檚 agricultural and environmental research goals and, around 1967, the station was moved to the Macdonald Campus to further integrate these areas of research.听
Throughout its early years, the Brace Research Institute focused on developing technical expertise in fields such as desalination, irrigation, and agricultural water use, particularly in underdeveloped regions. In early 1970s, Brace operations were split into two divisions:听 Research, and Field Operations.
