Faculty Club Ballroom, 3450 rue McTavish, Montreal, QC, H3A 0E5, CA

Join us for the 2025-2026 Tom Nacos and family annual talk with professor Nicholas Doumanis, University of Illinois at Chicago giving a talk entitled: Globalizing Modern Greek history: What does it mean?

Abstract: What does it mean to write a history of Greece from a global perspective? Is Greece exceptional or is it just a typical small Balkan or eastern Mediterranean country? This lecture will argue that to consider what is distinctive about any nation, one must place it in a transnational context. Some topics seem unique to Greece, such as the acrid nature of the National Schism, and the fact that Greece was the only post-World War Two country to succumb to civil war, but such developments can be made more explicable when global influences and developments are considered. Globalizing modern Greek history also means giving serious consideration to the diaspora and what its history says about Greece in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.
