Internship Spotlight: Cate Laskey - Regent Park Film Festival

This summer, thanks to the support of the Toronto Women, Leadership and Philanthropy Group, I had the privilege of interning with Toronto鈥檚 Regent Park Film Festival (RPFF). For three months, I worked alongside a dedicated team, gaining valuable skills, experience, and perspective augmenting my academic pursuits and informing my personal development.

I was immediately intrigued by the position, which closely aligned with my personal interests and, in a unique way, my studies in History and Economics. Academically, I was eager to learn more about the business and operational mechanics of a non-profit organization and supplement my historical understanding of the city and Regent Park area. Not to mention that working in the arts, particularly in film, had been a lifelong aspiration. Therefore, when I came across a posting for a film festival in my hometown that I鈥檇 previously admired, I jumped at the opportunity. Moreover, RPFF鈥檚 commitment to making film and art accessible to all while amplifying marginalized voices from within the community only strengthened my desire to contribute to the organization.

Founded in 2003, RPFF is Toronto鈥檚 longest-running free film festival, and, as a community-based non-profit organization, is committed to showcasing stories that reflect the lived experiences of the neighborhood it serves. Its award-winning, year-round programming extends far beyond their annual festival, presenting an annual school program, insightful filmmaking workshops, a summer screening series, and more.

As the Operations and Logistics Intern, I contributed mainly to the planning and execution of RPFF鈥檚 aforementioned summer screening series, Under the Stars. Event preparation consisted of reviewing and updating various event run-of-show documents, coordinating with external partners and vendors to secure rentals, conducting research detailing equipment cost-alternatives, and maintaining communication with volunteers regarding shifts and event updates, all of which represented only a fraction of the logistical steps taken to ensure a smooth and successful screening. During event days, I worked primarily as the on-site staff lead at the concessions booth, while also assisting in overseeing park setup and teardown, serving as an additional point of contact for volunteers, and troubleshooting issues as needed.

Initially, I found the learning curve for the position somewhat steep but hesitated to ask for help from coworkers. For example, I was tasked to edit and update preparatory documentation for a screening event, and since I had never taken part in one previously, I found it challenging to navigate on my own. I soon realized that, to produce a more sophisticated, useful document, I would require the assistance of more experienced coworkers. They were, in fact, happy to help. This experience reminded me of the value of transparent communication and collaboration in order to improve outcomes.

Engaging with volunteers became one of the most rewarding and memorable parts of my internship. I enjoyed getting to know them during event evenings and was inspired by the enthusiasm with which they undertook their roles. This enthusiasm extended to fellow staff as well, who demonstrated a continual, admirable commitment to producing quality results despite the demanding workload of each event day. I felt humbled to be a part of this dynamic team and now take away valuable lessons inspired by their creativity, insight, and dedication.

Once again, I would like to thank the Toronto Women, Leadership & Philanthropy Group Members for granting me the Toronto Women, Leadership & Philanthropy (WLP) Internship Award, which made it financially possible for me to take on this remarkable opportunity. It is because of their funding that I was able to explore Toronto鈥檚 unique artistic scene while developing practical skills in event coordination, community engagement, and non-profit operations. For that, I鈥檇 like to extend my heartfelt gratitude for this tremendous opportunity which has helped me grow personally and professionally
