Artexte Visit
I would like to open this summer internship recap by thanking Mr. Andrew Buntain for awarding me the Andrew Buntain Arts Internship Award. The award provided me with financial support that allowed me to fully focus on my internship at McBride Contemporain, where I worked as a gallery assistant from May to mid-August. This internship was a crucial component of my bachelor's degree in art history, which I will be finishing this year in April, before undertaking a graduate certificate in curatorial studies and a master鈥檚 degree in cultural management. As a returning student who left a 10-year career in corporate fashion to pursue a new path in the arts, this award and the internship it permitted me to do were a pivotal opportunity for my current endeavour, as it introduced me to the Montreal art world while simultaneously advancing my degree in a financially stress-free environment. Pursuing an internship this summer was not only important for my personal development in the art world, but also for my degree, as I will be taking the museum internship course during my fall semester, where I will be researching the art-buying trends and behaviours of individuals who were born into wealth and generational art acquiring compared to first generation art buyers who made their fortune with NFTs or crypto currency. This research will be conducted under the supervision of Professor Reilley Bishop-Stall. I specifically chose McBride Contemporain as my host organization for this internship, as it gave me access to a diverse clientele, both local and international.

Located in the BELGO, the historic building hosting the largest concentration of contemporary art galleries in Canada, McBride Contemporain is part of a colourful art scene in the heart of the Montreal Downtown area and shares strong links with institutions such as the Museum of Fine Arts. During the summer, I had the chance to take part in a plethora of activities and duties, starting strong with supporting my director, Soad Carrier, in the curation and installation of the summer exhibit, called Between the Cracks in the Sidewalk. My involvement in this task is what led me to pursue more research into which university programs offer academic training in curation, ultimately guiding me to Concordia鈥檚 new curatorial studies degree. The following week, I was asked to support my director in the preparation of an important visit with the Circle of Angels, the philanthropists who support the Museum of Fine Arts. This was such a fun moment to be part of, as it was the first time the donors left the museum walls to visit galleries as a group. Then, over June and early July, I focused most of my time on documentation of the gallery鈥檚 artists, setting up a file for each one with documents ranging from press releases and journal articles to exhibition invites. Then, I was tasked with sharing all this documentation with Artexte, a non-profit archive institution which maintains archival boxes for Canadian artists. Finally, during the last two weeks of my internship, we closed the gallery and did a thorough inventory clean-up, which turned out to be my favourite task, allowing me to access up to 250 artworks accumulated by the gallery since its opening.

Set up at Patel Brown for a talk with the BELGO gallery directors during the evening with the Circle of Angels from the Museum of Fine Arts.
Being the first intern at McBride Contemporain, I had to work closely with my director to create a framework for my internship while constantly checking in to make sure that the tasks I was doing were related to my goals. Ultimately, I was able to develop a strong bond with my director as we nurtured a constant and solid communication flow throughout the summer.

In conclusion, I would like to thank Mr. Andre Buntain for making this opportunity possible and making a long-lasting impact on my future career development through his generous support.
