Drawing from over six years of ethnographic research in Recife and Rio de Janeiro\, my book Untrusting: In Pursuit of Democrati c Policing in Brazil interrogates the intricate dynamics of trust and its cultural\, gendered\, and racialized dimensions. Focusing on a chapter tha t examines Recife’s favelas and development projects in the urban mangrove s\, this talk will explore how these contaminated landscapes serve as an e xtension of the Black body. In a city divided into wet and dry\, contamina ted and pure\, Black and white\, the racialization of nature is a lingerin g legacy of tropical medicine and hygienization that continues to shape pu blic policy and policing. By positioning the mangroves as a site of mistru st and radical possibility\, this talk interrogates how the intertwined pr ocesses of environmental and racial marginalization impact sociality and p olicing. Ultimately\, untrusting becomes a lens to rethink security and de mocracy as sites of both exclusion and care.\n\n \n DTSTART:20250327T163000Z DTEND:20250327T180000Z LOCATION:Room 160\, Arts Building\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 0G5\, 853 rue Sherbrooke Ouest SUMMARY:CANCELLED - Anthropology Speaker Series - Marta-Laura Haynes URL:/anthropology/channels/event/cancelled-anthropolog y-speaker-series-marta-laura-haynes-362507 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
