Across the medieval Islamic world\,\n authors of medical texts could draw knowledge from multiple epistemic traditions. \n Often\, their choices were shaped by which authorities they felt closest to and sought\n to emulate in their lives as well as their medical practic e. Focusing on the regions\n surrounding the western Indian Ocean\, I show how physicians and ulema were just\n as interested in how medical authoriti es lived as they were in what they knew. Their\n interest in these ancient and contemporary medical men helped them shape their own\n notion of an app ropriate medical masculinity.\n\nShireen Hamza is a historian and artist\, and an educator with the\n Prison & Neighborhood Arts/Education Project (P NAP). She continues her research on\n the history of medicine in the mediev al Islamic world through a postdoctoral fellowship\n at Northwestern Univer sity.\n DTSTART:20240124T193000Z DTEND:20240124T213000Z LOCATION:SSoM seminar room 101\, Peel 3647\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 1X1\, 3647 rue Peel SUMMARY:Dr. Shireen Hamza - The Proximity of Masculinity: Gender\, Space\, and Medical Authority in Medieval Islam URL:/anthropology/channels/event/dr-shireen-hamza-prox imity-masculinity-gender-space-and-medical-authority-medieval-islam-354400 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
